Moving Guide 3 to 1 Week Before Moving

Moving guide, the best way to move!

3 Weeks before moving

  • Please notify your moving agent if you decide you need to make changes in your moving date or if you will need any additional assistance or accessories, such as piano moving, packing and unpacking, storage etc. If so you need to inform the agent for additional pricing information, this may also be necessary if you add or subtract any items from your planned shipment.
  • Decide ahead of time how much packing you will be able to handle yourself. Also, you need to inform your agent of any items that you have decided you will need them to pack for you.
  • If you are moving your car with a car carrier, you need to make your final reservation for a car pick up at this time (3 weeks prior to the moving date).
  • Depending on how much your houseplants mean to you; you may consider giving your plants to friends or to a charity if you are moving from one state to another. Also note that some state laws prohibit the moving of houseplants, others may need them be quarantined for a time in the new state before you can bring them to your new home.
  • Organize all transportation arrangements for your pets at this time. Take your pets to your veterinarian to ensure proper up to date health certificates and rabies inoculations and if flying or driving for long distances have your Vet prescribe a mild sedative for the journey. This will allow for a minimum of stress on your dog and the number of pit stops you will have to make for them to get out and do their business. Also note that some states will require up to date veterinarian documentation for your pets to be admitted into their new state (or country) of residence.
  • Arrange to carry all of your valuable jewelry with you during your move. If you have any valuables around the house, be sure to collect them before leaving the property.
  • Return any borrowed items such as library books, DVDs, neighbor's belongings and be sure to. Collect all items that are being repaired stored or cleaned (clothing, furs, shoes electronics etc.).

2 Weeks before moving

  • Be sure to see all your doctors for refills on all necessary prescriptions. Also take this time to transfer all your prescriptions to a drugstore in your new city. Also find new physicians in proximity to your new home. Call your bank to find out how to transfer your accounts. Clear all your safety deposits boxes.
  • Prior to disassembling and disconnecting your computer system to pack up before your move. Be sure to back up all your computer files on a disk. Consider taking all back up files disks with you in the car. (Also take note that exposure to extreme temperatures can damage your software).
  • Make one last inventory of your belongings and make your final packing decisions. Clean and clear your home including closets, basement and attics and the items that you will take.
  • Dispose of items that represent a hazard and are not allowed to be shipped.
  • Tape and seal all cleaning fluids that are non-toxic, non-flammable in plastic bags.
  • Drain your lawn mower, snow blower, power toolset of all the oil and gasoline to ensure safe transportation.
  • Schedule appliance disconnection and preparation with a service provider.
  • If you decide you need to store anything, call your van line agent in regards to all the various storage options available to you.
  • Give a minimum of two weeks to inform your gas, electric, cable, telephone and other utility services of your move. Arrange to have them disconnected from your present home the day after your scheduled moving day or have them switched to your new location. If not, sign up for services at your new address and connect them on your moving in day.
  • If traveling by car, have your automobile serviced,( oil changed, tires rotated, car tuned up). Make sure you have road side assistance such as triple AAA and double check that your spare tire and jack are in good working order. The further your journey the more important this care check up is.

1 Week before moving

  • Make sure to mark which items you'll take yourself, so the movers won't take them by mistake.
  • Walk through your house several times to make sure you haven't overlooked anything in the house.
  • Mark all boxes to be shipped with stickers or a marker stating their contents and how they are to be packed, "Fragile", "Do Not Load", "Load Last" etc.
  • Be sure to empty, defrost and clean your refrigerator, freezer and clean your stove, all at least 24 hours before moving to let them air out. Try using baking soda to get rid of any odors once they are dried.
  • Prepare all the items you will need while your goods are in transit. Pack your suitcases and confirm travel arrangements for you and your family. Try to keep your plans as flexible as possible in the event of an unexpected delay or last minute schedule change.
  • Make sure your agent knows the address and phone number your new home. You should also provide an address and phone number of where you can be reached until you will get to your new home.
  • Arrange for payment to your van line agent. Contact your van line agent to inquire about methods of payment accepted.
  • Inquire with your moving company or van line agents about protecting your goods.
