Making sure your items get delivered to your new home is not the only thing to worry about when you are planning your move. You also want to make sure that your items do not get broken or damaged due to unprofessional packing. Here are some tips that can save you time, money and damages:
- Sorting through your items before starting to pack. Throw away items you do not want to move or donate items you do not need.
- Start packing things that you do not need until after you are already in your new home, such as winter, summer clothes or holiday items.
- Work on one room at a time.
- Make sure to keep a running list of boxes and what is inside them. This will be a definite advantage to help you sort boxes in your new home.
- Label each box with a number and what room it belongs in. The numbers will help make sure that you have received all your boxes at delivery.
Protect your items:
Make sure to utilize your packing materials in an efficient way to decrease the likelihood of damages. Here are some tips:
- Use smaller sturdy boxes for heavy items such as boxes.
- Limit your boxes to no more than 50lbs each.
- Pack heavier items on the bottom of the box and lighter items on top.
- Use only boxes that have a sturdy cover that can be securely taped.
- Make sure to wrap items carefully and leave some cushioning.
- Label boxes that are fragile.
- Use moving pads or blankets to wrap furniture and appliances.
- It is also a very good idea to record serial numbers and model numbers of all computers, stereo equipment and other electronics.
Difficult to pack items:
You need to take extra care with fragile items. Items move in a truck when in route so make sure your fragile items are properly packed. Here are some tips:
- Pack mirrors and pictures in proper mirror/picture boxes. When constructing mirror or picture boxes fold along the creases and slide the boxes together. Two pieces will be useful for small pictures or mirrors and four pieces for larger items.
- Pack mirrors or pictures tightly to avoid shifting during the move. Place two inches of crinkled paper around the inside edges of the box for additional protection.
- Large screen televisions should either be re-packed in their original boxes. If you do not have the original boxes them it should be padded. Cut a large piece of cardboard and after you pad the television tape the cardboard over the screen part of the television.
- Electronics should be packed in their original boxes. If you do not have the original boxes then wrap each piece of equipment individually with layers of cushion or crinkled paper.
- Plates and bowls should be wrapped separately. They should be bundled and stacked in sets of three or four. Each stack should be wrapped again before placing them in a cushioned box.
- Stacks of fragile items should never lay flat. Bowls should be placed face down.
- Cups and glasses should be wrapped individually and then placed rim down in the middle or top layers of the box.
- Extra delicate crystal, china figurines and knock knacks should be packed with extra paper or bubble wrap. Placing these items in small boxes and then into large boxes with extra cushion will prevent damages to delicate items.
