
Organization and preplanning is the key to a successful move. Here is plan to help you get organized:
6-8 Weeks before your move day:
- Start collecting suitable packing materials if you plan to do your own packing.
- Now is the time to decide what is going and what is not. Contact local charities to donate any unwanted items. Have a garage sale. This is the time to plan what you are taking and what not.
- If you have children research schools and daycare in your new city.
- Get familiar with your new community. Call the Chamber of Commerce of information about your new area.
- Finalize all real estate and rental needs.
- Place all-important documents in a safe place.
- Make all travel arrangements, if moving out of state.
- Think about your new home and start thinking about where you want to place the furniture, this will prevent some of the stress on unloading day.
4-5 Weeks before your move day:
- Do a change of address in your local post office.
- Make sure to contact all the proper agencies with your new information:
- Utilities
- Telephone Company
- Cable Company
- Water Company
- Electric Company
- Internet Provider
- Friends and Family
- Insurance Companies
- Bank and Financial Services
- Local government agencies
- Health Providers
- Schools
- Magazine and Newspaper Subscriptions
- Arrange for your moving services. If you are doing a self move, rent a truck.
- If you are planning on using a moving company or packing services book your day for pickup.
3 Weeks before your move day:
- If you are packing your house, start the process now. Packing always takes longer than anticipated.
- If you are moving from a building with any restrictions, contact your building office to schedule your move.
- Make Transportation arrangements for any vehicles or other equipment that needs to get transported to your new location.
- Be in touch with your van line agents, if using one, of any changes in dates or items being moved.
- Consider giving our plants to friends or family if you are moving gout if state. Some states prohibit the transport of houseplants.
2 Weeks before your move:
- Reconfirm your dates for the moving company or packing services.
- Have your automobile serviced, if using it for traveling.
- Drain lawnmower, snow blower or any either gas powered machine of all its fluids.
- Transfer all prescriptions to your new drugstore.
- Transfer all bank accounts to your new community bank.
1 Week before your move:
- Make sure you have packed everything except for essentials.
- Reduce your food purchases.
- Make sure all your boxes are properly marked.
- If you are using a van line make sure to inquire about insurance for your items.
- Prepare your items that you will need during your travel to your new home.
1 Day before moving day:
- Pack our last minute packing for the moving truck and for your travel.
- Defrost thoroughly the refrigerator.
- Make a final tour of your home and double check all closets.
Day of move:
- Make sure all the information on any contracts have your correct information.
- Accompany the driver during inventory. Check the conditions of all items as they are being loaded.
- Switch off all lights.
- Lock all windows and doors.
